What is it?

The favicon is the small graphic in the corner of your browser tabs. They are usually 16px in 16 px in size and are a logo or small graphic that represents the company or organization of the website.

Why should you care?

Even though favicons are a very small element of a website they are an important part of the user experience.  Depending on the browser favicons are displayed in the  address bar, in the links bar, in the bookmarking area, and in its browsing tab.  This allows users looking for your site to easily identify your site among all the other content they have saved or open.  It is also a good opportunity to reinforce your brand, vs using the default browser favicon.
